Moni Kaliviani
Founded in the 14th century AD the convent of Moni Kaliviani with its oldest church was abandoned after the Turkish occupation. In the 14th century chapel of the monastery, dedicated to the Panagia Kalivianis, there are a number of impressive ancient frescoes and the new church was built to host the holy icon of the Virgin that was discovered in a neglected area. The icon is believed to be miraculous. The nuns run an orphanage, a museum for popular and religious art, a sanatorium and a store selling their embroidery and handicrafts.
