Aghios Fanourios gorge

It is a gorge of relatively small length. It starts from Avgeniki and leads to the church of Agios Fanourios, which is situated near the village of Venerato. It is a beautiful small oasis full of impressive waterfalls, many wild birds and a cave with stalactites, which was used as a shelter during the bombings of the Second World War.

Moni Paliani

Founded in the 7th century AD, the ancient Paliani monastery was once among the most important monastic communities of Crete. A courtyard filled with roses, geraniums and many other flowers surrounds the nun';s cells. It is a place of tranquility and peacefulness. There are some very old frescos and remarkable icons to admire in the 13th century three-aisled basilica at the center of the convent. At the back of the basilica there is a 1.000 years old myrtle tree, where the holy icon of the Panagia Myrtidiotissa was found. Since then, the tree has been regarded as sacred. The 50 nuns support themselves by selling lace and embroideries.
