Odigitria Monastery

The road leading to the monastery is picturesque offering spectacular panoramic views of the area. The monastery dates from the 16th century AD and is dedicated to Virgin Mary ";The Guiding Force";. In the double-aisled church you will see a collection of fabulous portable icons. In the past, walls, some of which are still visible, surrounded the monastery. Its gate on the north side of the monastery was constructed in 1568. On the right side of the entrance you will see the tower of Xopateras, a Cretan hero who fought bravely to protect the monastery from the enemy during the Turkish occupation.

In 1981 archeologists found a tomb complex of five chambers near the monastery. Some of the tombs date from the mid Early Minoan period while others were built in the Old Palace Period (2500-2000 BC). Fifty-two seals made of ivory, steatite and faience with animal representations were found in the tombs.
