Domenicos Theotokopoulos, alias El Greco, was born in Fodele in 1545. He probably first studied painting at the Cretan School of Arts and then moved to Italy where he became a disciple of Titian. In 1576 he left Italy and, after a brief stopover in Malta, arrived in Spain in the spring of 1577. His most famous work, an oil painting for the church of Santo Tome in his adopted hometown, Toledo, is an enormous canvas that bridges the gap between realism and mysticism of the Mannerist era. It was created in 1586 and was given the title ";The Burial of Count Orgaz";. El Greco died in Toledo on the 7th of April 1614 and was buried in Santo Domingo el Antiguo, Toledo.
