Overview
The peninsula of Akrotiri, a short distance northwest of Hania, is a delightful place for relaxation and walking.
On Akrotiri there are the large monasteries of Agia Triada Tzagarolon, Couverneto, Korakia, Agios loannis Eleimona and many others scattered in different places. Near Moni Couvernetou is the abandoned monastic complex of the Katholikon, built at the end of a wild gorge which is well worth a visit.
Many of the old villages of Akrotiri preserve fine examples of popular architecture. In the protected harbour of Sοuda, near the seaside villages of Marathi (ancient Minoa), lies the island of Agios Nikolaos, which was fortified by the Venetians in the 16th century and today is a naval garrison.
At the locality of Profitis Ilias is the tomb of one of Greece's greatest statesman, Eleftherios Venizelos. From it there is a splendid view of the town and bay of Chania.
The clean sea can be enjoyed at the beaches of Kalathas and Stavros as well as other smaller ones.
