Overview

Mires, just 7 km west of the archeological site of Gortys is an agricultural town that has taken over Gorty';s old role as the commercial center of the Messara Plain.

Mires, a bustling farming town 7 km west of Gortys, is the transport center for the area. Buses to Phaistos, Zaros, Matala, Kamares, Timbaki or Rethymnon all depart from the bus station of the town. It is a center for local commerce. On Saturdays there is a big market that takes place in Mires.

About three km west of the town a small road leads to the monastery of Moni Kaliviani.
