Overview

The village Zwniana abstains 43 kilometres from Heraklion and 52 from Rethimno. Zwniana is a  village with a long history and is located in the Prefecture of Rethimno, in the region Mylopotamos. The name Zwniana was given in 1920. Previously it  was named "Zoy the Lakkos", name that perhaps emanates from Via (Zeus).

The Zwniana is situated on mountain Psiloreti in altitude of 630 metres and in close distance from the known Anwgeia. The main employment of the residents is livestock - farming. At the entry of the village is the cave "Sfentoni" or "the Sfentoni the Hole". It is one of the most beautiful caves of Greece.

Follow the signs at the entry of the village and you fast will quickly reach the parking space. Precisely next to that there is a kiosk of reception with panoramic view. Here you will also buy your ticket, which costs 4 € (2004).

In the cave you cannot enter alone but with a specially educated guide, who is in charge of your own safety and of the cavern';s he will explain to you all the secrets. The guides are residents of the village and they grew up playing in the galleries of the cave, very much before a special configuration for the visitors took place. It would be very hard to find itself more suitable individuals for position.
