Overview

Full of archaeological sites and monuments, the region of West Kissamos also combines the natural beauty of the sea with numerous beaches from Kasteli to Falasarna, and on the west coast of Crete as far as Elafonisi and Cape Krios. Kasteli, Polyrineia and Falasarna were among the most important towns in ancient times, and a visit to the historical island of Gramvousa with its Venetian castle and the wild beauty of the coast at Balos is an experience not to be missed.

Many churches with fresco paintings can be seen in the lovely villages of fertile Kissamos, like Agia Varvara at Latziana, and Venetian villas like the Rotonda at Kalathenes and another at Drapania. Kasteli is connected by sea with Kythera and the Peloponnese.
