Overview

The settlement of Afitos exists from 3.000 B.C. Affitos was one of the most important states of Pallini and is mentioned by distinguished ancient writers like Aristotelis, Irodotos, Thoukididis, Xenofontas, etc. The sanctuary of Dionyssos, as well as its equivalent of Dias contributed to the reputation of the city. Affitos was such an important center of the period that it even had its own currrency and contributed with polemic boats to the wars that Xerxis started.

 
After the battle of Plataion (459B.C), Affitos escaped from the influence of Persians and became member of the Athenian Alliance. There is a long historical period during which we have no information relevant to Affitos. It reappears in ducoments of Mount Athos of the 14th century. It was the homeland of important leaders of the greek revolution in 1821.

In the second half of the 19th century, it developed a particular architectural style, which is maintained until today in the houses of the village. most houses are made of stone showing the zeal of its builders.
