Overview

Kozani is a beautiful city built on a plateau at an altitude of 710 m., surrounded by densely wooded hills and wonderful parks. The city has many interesting sites, picturesque houses and notable churches. Kozani of today is a significant commercial centre, with many industries and electricity plants of the Greek Electricity Company.
Kozani is built on the ruins of an ancient Macedonian city. In the 16th century it was one of the major cities in Macedonia. Wool industry, weaving and trade thrived and the city enjoyed a period of prosperity that was reflected in the promotion of education. In 1665 a famous Greek school was founded where bright scholars of the time taught. In the period 1769-1775 Kozani was tried by the Turkish cruelty. The city was liberated in 1912 and was unified with Greece.
