Overview

The Prefecture of Serres is one of the 13 Prefectures in Macedonia, admittedly the largest and wealthiest region in Greece. Located in Eastern Macedonia the town of Serres stretches from the Strimonicos bay in the South to the Greek-Bulgarian borders in the North. 48% of the total area is characterized as flat and semi-mountainous and it is surrounded by the ranges of Kerkini-Vertisco-Kerdillia and Orvilos-Menicio from the West and the East respectively.

The Prefecture is of particular historical and archeological interest which is combined with remarkable natural beauty. The magical sanctuary of lake Kerkini is a case in point. The area offers food, shelter and protection to many rare species of animals as well as plants.

Visitors can also take advantage of the entertaining facilities of the modern skiing centre on the mountain of Lailias which is 20 km north of the town. The suburb known as Agios Ioannis attracts huge numbers of visitors throughout the year which is also the case for Alistratis Cave, famous for its rare beauty. Moreover, visitors can admire the beautiful landscape of the valley of Agioi Anargiroi and enjoy the cool climate in Ano Poroia. The pine clad area of Koulas offers a wonderful, panoramic view of the town.
