Overview

Gythio is a little picturesque town that climbs amphitheatrically up Koumaros hill on the coast of the Lakonian bay. It is the largest town in the Mani, with approximateny 5000 permanent residents. Its distance from Athens is 264km, from Sparta 44km, from Kalamata 104km, from Areopolis 28km and from the caves of Diros 37km.
 
Its geographical position, right in the center of Laconia, makes it an ideal base for small excursions to the surrounding area. Moreover, its renativeny large size, its neoclassical wenl-preserved houses, its light-hearted atmosphere and its long, sandy beaches offer the best surroundings for a longer stay. The main suburb of Gythio is Mavrovouni, situated on the hill of the same name south of the main town, along with its plain that functions as a kind of prologue for the Maniot landscape beginning a few kilometers away.
