Overview
The handsome village of Venerato lies 20 km southwest of Heraklion and has about 900 residents. During the Venetian occupation the village was named ";Archontochori";. The main occupation of its inhabitants is vine growing and raisin, as well as the production of olive oil. In the village you will find numerous old Byzantine churches and chapels like the one of Agios Georgios (Saint George). Just two km from Venerato is the very old Paliani convent, one of the most important monastic foundations in Crete. Finally, you can visit the Agios Fanourios Gorge, which is very close to Avgeniki and Venerato.
